MORRÍSLAND
MORRÍSLAND
Glöggt er gests augað
Our Vice Chair, Peter Jones, will give two presentations in June about his ongoing research into William Morris and Iceland. One at MAMO 2025 (Middle Ages in the Modern World) at King’s College London, 24-26 June; the other at London Heritages Conference 2025 at the University of Greenwich, 25-27 June.
“Morris visited Iceland twice, once in the Summer of 1871 and again in the Summer of 1873, each time spending about three months trekking by Icelandic horse around the numerous Saga sites spread across the island.
Both presentations will centre around Peter’s metaphorical map/atlas, MORRÍSLAND* Glöggt er gests augað**.
The first iteration was created during his Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of the Arts Iceland and exhibited in Design March Reykjavik. This large format metaphorical atlas plots Peter’s findings and interpretations about Iceland and Morris’s relationship to this volcanic island in the middle of the North Atlantic.
It is no coincidence that after returning from Iceland that Morris’s passion for books, socialism, conservation and indeed women’s suffrage began to emerge.
Details of the conferences can be found through the links above. The London Heritages is rather expensive. The MAMO conference is very reasonable and has a day rate for concessions, plus it will likely be more informal.”
* ÍSLAND ~ Icelandic for Iceland.
** Glöggt er gests augað ~ an Icelandic saying, keen is the guest’s eye.
