The River Thames: Highway for London

The Thames is the key to why London became the capital first of England, then the United Kingdom and the British Empire, for the city is located at its narrowest crossing point.
Easily accessible from Europe, the river has been the principal route for trade into the kingdom, and for centuries it has also provided the theatre for pageantry and grand ceremony.
Ex-chair Margaret Willes’s talk illuminates how the river played a pivotal role in the development of the city’s commerce and culture, industry and institutions. Through Claes Visscher’s View of London, Canaletto’s The River Thames on Lord Mayor’s Day and other illustrations, we will discover how the river is inextricably linked to the capital’s and indeed the nation’s heritage and history.

Prospective New Members Evening

As a Society, we are lucky to have wonderful and inspiring members from the worlds of publishing, editorial, typography, design, illustration and print. And we would like more of them! In recent years, our membership numbers have rather dwindled, and we would love to bring them back to what they once were.
One of the Society’s rules, which may be a small barrier to more members being introduced, is that potential new members attend at least one luncheon or evening meeting (preferably two) prior to nomination, as the guest of a current member. As costs have unavoidably increased, this has become a significant outlay.
In light of this, we are relaunching our Prospective New Members Evening – a subsidised event costing just £10 per ticket. Simply bring along at least one prospective new member – ideally more! (Members can attend without a guest, at a price of £20, but as numbers are limited, priority will be given to members with guests.)
We are being hosted by Society member Simon Goode at his fantastic London Centre for Book Arts in east London. The evening is a chance for members and their guests to visit this inspiring space, to see work by existing members, to experience some beautiful calligraphy, as well as to just catch up with old friends.
