Phil Baines at the Lethaby Gallery

An exhibition of beautiful typographic work by Society member Phil Baines opens at the Lethaby Gallery at Central Saint Martins on Tuesday 7 November.

This exhibition celebrates letters through the lens of his work - from letterforms printed on the page to those which appear on signs or public monuments. It surfaces the complexity of thinking underpinning how language is rendered and explores what it is to become a successful designer, from finding a voice to collaborating with artists, writers and architects to test ideas and push boundaries.

The exhibition showcases a wide range of design contexts, from Penguin book covers to public memorials commemorating the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the July 7 2005 London bombings. It also shares the influences, including medieval manuscripts, rare and early printed books and photographic archives, which have helped shape Phil Baines’ approach.
